They Cast Lots

April 13, 2018

The large and impending stone angel sculpture by Bernini stands planted in the soothing green color of the land. In the background can be seen a threatening storm, the viewer determines if the turbulence has past or is yet to be experienced.

This is the first in a series using one of the ten angel sculptures by Bernini that can be found on the Ponte Sant'Angelo (the Bridge of Angels) in Rome. Spanning the Tiber River, each angel holds a symbol of Christ's suffering and death. In these pieces I use a dramatic and foreboding sky in contrast to a vivid green and soothing landscape. The Bernini angel looms large in the environment, this particular sculpture is an angel holding the cloak of Christ with the dice that the soldiers used... "They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots." (Psalm 22:18).

They Cast Lots measures unframed 16 x 20 inches and is an original oil on canvas, shown here with a heavy solid wood gold frame. It is available for purchase as an original oil on canvas and also as museum quality giclee prints.
