They Cast Lots

They Cast Lots measures unframed 16 x 20 inches and is an original oil on canvas. In the tradition of the Old Masters, I use walnut oil glazes to build depth and saturation of color. This is the first in a series using one of the ten angel sculptures by Bernini that can be found on the Ponte Sant'Angelo (the Bridge of Angels) in Rome. Spanning the Tiber River, each angel holds a symbol of Christ's suffering and death. In these pieces I use a dramatic and foreboding sky in contrast to a vivid green and soothing landscape. The Bernini angel looms large in the environment, this particular sculpture is an angel holding the cloak of Christ with the dice that the soldiers used... "They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots." (Psalm 22:18)

The frame is made from a heavy solid wood with a beautiful gold finish. The outside measurements are 22.5 x 26.5 inches.
