Mare Tranquillitatis

Mare Tranquillitatis or The Sea of Tranquility measures unframed 18 x 24 inches and is an original oil on wood panel with Lapis Lazuli powder and silver metal highlights. I used many layers of oil glazes made with walnut oil and Sennelier French ultramarine blue for the vivid and deep color in which the moon and the lotus flower appear to float. I added genuine Lapis Lazuli mineral powder (stone from one of the oldest lazurite mines in the world in Afghanistan) to areas of the moon. Giving more depth to the moon, I applied Schmincke bronze powder (silver) and then added layers of oil glazing. The center of the lotus flower appears to glow with the many glazed layers of Radiant White in contrast to the purple/blue lotus.

The silver frame is well-made and heavy from solid wood. The outside dimensions of the frame are 23.25 x 29.25 inches.
