One of a series of commisions from Foras na Gaeilge, Whitaker is a former Irish economist and public servant, credited with a pivotal role in the economic development of Ireland. He won the "Greatest Living Irish Person" award in 2002.

For this portrait, I had him sit comfortably in his living room where I could bring in the details of the traditional Irish patterns on the furnishings. He is a thoughtful and serene man and I used alot of blue to give a peaceful feeling, but the red reflects that he is a man of power. The open book where his hand rests symbolizes knowledge and learning.
